Official ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ trailer is filled with comics references

It’s not just about another Spider-Man movie, it’s about deep-cut comic moments finally hitting the screen as the new trailer pulls from some of Peter Parker’s darkest stories

Fans of comics have been waiting for the perfect comic-accurate Spider-Man movie for years, and today, Sony signaled we might be getting it this summer.

Yes, there have been plenty of comic-accurate moments in the many Spider-Man movies over the years, but there are a couple that scratch an itch in the new trailer we haven’t seen yet.

Check out the trailer below.

Firstly, the title is a reference to an iconic era of Spider-Man, titled “Brand New Day.” Lasting four years, the story continued after “No Way Home,” which reset who knew Spider-Man’s secret identity, including Mary Jane.

Most prominently visually revealed, the trailer shows Spider-Man going through his cocoon phase, waking up in webs. It’s possibly from the four-part “Shrieking” story arc in Amazing Spider-Man issues #390-393 (1994), the story featured Peter Parker in a deep state of depression. Given he’s lost his two best friends and love MJ, it’s a fitting arc to reference. Or, it could be from the JMS story “The Other,” which gave Spider-Man his organic web shooters.

Also revealed in the trailer are Scorpion and Tarantula, two recurring villains we’ve yet to see in the films. It’s also a welcome to see Spider-Man knows Frank Castle, revealing they’ve tussled before. Note the screen grab below is a reference to the iconic cover art.

Then, in the frame below, you can see Spider-Man striking an iconic pose from the comics and Boomerang chasing after him.

Also, in the villain department, when we see the SWAT team losing control of themselves, this is clearly a reference to Mr. Negative, who can take over people’s minds.

Speaking of iconic poses, the trailer also featured Spider-Man in the iconic Amazing Fantasy #15 cover pose.

Iconic!

There’s also a large number of ninjas dressed in red, which could likely be The Hand, the prominent gang Daredevil tends to tango with. If that’s the case, Daredevil could make an appearance.  Nothing quite beats a superhero versus hundreds of murder drones!

The film is stacked with villains, so let’s hope it doesn’t suffer from the superhero movie curse of too many villains equalling a bad film experience!

Did I miss any comic references? I bet there’s more!
