‘Invincible’ season 4 episode 7 review: An epic showdown

Invincible and company take the fight to Vitrium.

It’s all out war on Invincible. The Coalition of Planets were making gains against the Viltrumites causing the enemy to change their tactics and strike at the capital of Talescria. The heroes were able to repel the attack, and in “Don’t Do Anything Rash,” Thaedus hopes to end the war by taking the fight to Vitrium.

The opening flashback is insightful in many ways providing glimpses into significant moments in Viltrumite history. The events leading to the assassination of Emperor Argall paint Thragg in a slightly different light. He has a history with Thaedus and a respect for the man who would become his biggest rival. That respect even reveals a rational and empathetic side, which seems rare for his people. Even though he rules with an iron fist, there was once a more reasonable person inside.

It’s one thing to hear throughout Invincible how ruthless the Viltrumites are, but it’s another to witness it. Thragg’s mental descent following the death of the emperor leads to the Great Purge. The civil war is vicious and violent as the alien race tries to stamp out any weakness. It’s even disturbing to see the children take part fueled by bloodlust. They were doing a good job of killing Viltrumites even before the Scourge virus.

But the episode will be best known for the actual battle. Talescria was only an appetizer to the Vitrium action. It’s so much fun to watch team Coalition of Planets all together, even Space Racer and Battle Beast. Everyone had an opportunity to shine and it is good to see all the advantages collected in “I’ll Give You the Grand Tour” put to use.

Like any war, there are momentum shifts as one side temporarily gains an upper hand, and many dramatic moments. It is truly epic and you can sense the urgency and stakes with the danger being real. Other than Invincible, no one’s plot armor is strong enough to consider themselves safe. The build to Nolan’s final plan is well executed with the visuals combined with the musical score create a compelling build that leaves you holding your breath until the end. The sad look back by Nolan afterwards captures the regret of the lengths head had to go and the loss of a home.

The biggest impression is made by Thragg. He was noticeably absent during the attack on Talescria, but he shows here why he is the Grand Regent and the big bad. His strength and ability is unmatched with Nolan and Mark fighting out of desperation rather than really having the upper hand. The more worrisome thing is that he’s still out there especially after

“Don’t Do Anything Rash” follows up the previous episode with even more incredible and dramatic action while showcasing why Thragg is the main villain of the story.

Another great and insightful flashback into Viltrumite history.
Engaging and dramatic battle scenes with a sense of urgency and high stakes.
Starting to get desensitized by all the blood and violence.
