Marvel is gearing up for a major shakeup this year with Avengers: Armageddon, a new event series from writer Chip Zdarsky and artists Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar. Building out of Zdarsky’s Captain America run, along with threads from One World Under Doom and Wolverine: Weapons of Armageddon, the story centers on Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, the Red Hulk, as he seizes control of Latveria and pushes the world to the brink.
The fallout is expected to reshape the Avengers in a big way. As the heroes rally to stop Ross, the conflict promises lasting consequences, including a new team lineup and the debut of a powerful new hero. Today’s reveal also includes a preview of the debut issue, offering an early look at the scale of the conflict and the forces assembling against Ross.
Zdarsky hinted at the scale of what’s coming next. “It’s going to be pretty fractured, but when things are looking dark, someone will always step up. But what they’ll face will be wildly unexpected. Man, oh man, I’m pretty excited for people to see where we’re going!”
The preview brings together a wide range of Marvel characters, including the Tony Stark, Wolverine, Bucky Barnes, Namor, and David Colton’s Captain America. It also teases a dangerous new Hulk squad, one of the tools Ross uses to maintain control over Latveria.
Avengers: Armageddon #1 will launch with a main cover by Dike Ruan and a lineup of variants from Jerome Opeña, Skottie Young, Chip Zdarsky, Kaare Andrews, and Jenny Frison. Additional variants include artwork from Alex Ross’ Marvel Dimensions and a spoiler cover by Marco Checchetto that hints at the story’s larger impact.
The first printing will also include a special Magic: The Gathering promo card featuring Ryan Stegman’s art for “Warstorm Surge,” which will also appear as a variant cover.
Fans can get an early taste of the story in Armageddon/X-Men #1 CGD 2026, available May 2 for Comics Giveaway Day, ahead of the main event’s launch.
