Insomniac Games’ ‘Spider-Man: Miles Morales’ not brand new but an “enhancement” and “expansion” of Spider-Man PS4

The upcoming Insomniac Games Spider-Man: Miles Morales may not be a brand new game, but it still looks fun, right?

UPDATE: A report by Bloomberg has clarified the game will be a stand-alone product and not just an “enhancement” or an “expansion.” The news does confirm the game will be much shorter than the 40 hours to complete Spider-Man PS4. Jason Schreier also reported the comments by Sony executive Simon Rutter were “erroneous.” We’ll update you here as soon as we get more details on Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

Like many folks I was amazed to see Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man: Miles Morales announced yesterday at the PS5 video stream event. Not only did it look amazing, but it also meant Insomniac Games was putting a new Spider-Man game out on the PS5 at launch. The trailer promised the game would release during the holidays 2020–much like the release of the PS5 itself and all other games–which means it took Insomniac about two years to release a sequel videogame. Or did they?

The Telegraph has an exclusive interview with Simon Rutter, EVP Head of European Business at Sony Interactive Entertainment, and he spoke a bit about the PS5, but more importantly Spider-Man: Miles Morales itselfThere is no confirmation how much the Miles Morales game is brand new, but it’s pretty clear the game isn’t entirely 30 hours of new gameplay. Rutter points out, “I guess you could call it an expansion and an enhancement to the previous game,” which will likely make most of us pause. An expansion doesn’t sound as exciting as a new game, but maybe we need to wait and see what exactly is new?

The interview doesn’t go into great detail about what is new, but Rutter explained: “There’s a substantial Miles Morales component – which is the expansion element – but also within the game as well there’s been major enhancements to the game and the game engine, obviously deploying some of the major PlayStation 5 technology and features.”

Rutter also talks about the technical improvements of the PS5 and how it is a “promise for something better” and even going on to say Spider-Man: Miles Morales gave them the opportunity show off “a glimpse of what the new looks like.”

If I were a betting man I’d guess this new “expansion” will give players new powers, like Miles’ Venom Blast. Whatever this power is might be something new too:

Likely Insomniac will need to do a little work to make the cut-scenes make sense when replacing Miles with Peter Parker if that is how this game will work. Likely it’ll be incredibly fun to replay the game with a better system rendering the draw distance and graphics at higher resolution, but I have to say I was surprised to learn this news this morning.

All that said, producing a brand new game from top to bottom in two years is a nearly impossible task so we really shouldn’t be surprised by this news, either. Hell, if it integrates anything in the Gamerverse comic book series by Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum I’d be grateful too.

Does this news change your opinion of Spider-Man: Miles Morales or whether or not you’ll be buying a PS5 at launch? Let us know in the comments.
