Why Iron Man was right in ‘Captain America: Civil War’

Almost seven years ago, the Marvel Cinematic Universe unveiled the third Captain America installment entitled Civil War. In the film, Steve Rogers’ best buddy Bucky Barnes falls under the influence of Hydra and becomes their personal puppet. Barnes enlists the help of his friend Steve Rogers to clear his name. 

Meanwhile, Tony Stark’s Iron Man agrees to partake in the Sokovia Accords to help the government put a leash on The Avengers, which comes at the disdain of Rogers. Captain America, then, aids Barnes while forming a team to help. Iron Man forms another faction of a team to bring Barnes into custody. 

Obviously, I just recapped the majority of the movie, but I say all of this so that people understand the dynamics between the two superheroes. Captain America wants to help Bucky and bring the person responsible, Helmut Zemo, to justice. On paper that sounds good, but detaining Barnes is actually the better option so that he would not go haywire again. 

Also given the fact that they have footage of Zemo in the guise of a psychiatrist, and they could use Barnes’ testimony and who visited at the time of Barnes’ irrational incident, as evidence to have the authorities bring Zemo in, once they knew where he was located.. Stark was right in trying to apprehend Barnes. Regardless of the fact that he was a puppet for Hydra, the only way that his hostility could have been contained would be through his arrest. 

If anything, Rogers let his personal feelings get in the way of actual duty and he needed to make sure that his allegiance was only towards the law. 

Moreover, Tony Stark was also right in making sure that the government had a firm grip on The Avengers team with the Sokovia Accords. In reality, this would have not been any discussion and the government would have swooped in and made sure that a group like The Avengers would have been swiftly overseen by higher authorities as a way of not having too much power. That collides with the checks and balances of our government and nation. With that being said, the fact that Captain America refuses to sign the Accords just pisses me off to the point of seething rage.

It’s very obvious that Tony Stark is an agent for the law and Steve Rogers is an agent for what “he believes” is right and just. You can call me old-fashioned, but doing what seems best for the greater good, seems like the right decision and Stark made that decision when he decided to wisely keep the Avengers in check after they were deemed out of control.
