With the identity of the killer revealed previously on Only Murders in the Building, the season finale only had to tie up the loose ends and set up the next upcoming mystery. “My Best Friend’s Wedding” accomplishes both.
The episode begins delving into the back story of the killer’s motivations. No big surprises here as the series did a good job laying out the pieces throughout the season, yet it’s satisfying watching it all come together. The use of piano really helps accentuate Marshall’s declining mental state. The biggest takeaway is how much of a kind soul Sazz was. Jane Lynch exudes warmth and heart, and that’s even after the entire Project Ronkonkoma fiasco. That connection with the victim makes you feel sad that she’s gone, and it’s bittersweet during Charles’ last interaction with his stunt double.
Speaking of, Only Murders in the Building crafts a bungling but enthralling rescue. Charles’ love for Sazz and a chance at redemption are what fuels the former Brazzos. But when his courage begins to falter, it’s Oliver to the rescue in a touching and inspiring moment. There is no doubt that these two are each other’s ride or dies. Everyone has a role to play, even the West Tower residents, and though the climactic heroic moment makes sense to a degree, there still seems to be a bit of handwaving and suspension of disbelief to make it work. There are also clever camera work from unique perspectives capturing silly moments.

The second half follows the wedding between Oliver and Loretta. For a happy event, there’s a lot of tension based off the foreshadowing and the knowledge that each season finale ends with a dead body. The episode even teases tragedy with well timed suspenseful delays. Fortunately, it’s a lovely ceremony, and nothing is as magical than watching Meryl Streep dressed up walking down the aisle.
But Only Murders in the Building can’t end without another victim in the Arconia. In a grisly scene, another beloved periphery character on the show kicks the bucket. If you look closely, before the dramatic reveal you can see a blood trail off to the side. What’s more interesting is the mysterious visit that Charles and Mabel receive from a woman (Téa Leoni) who wants to hire their services. Her case has ties to the building, and their is no way that her case and the most recent murder are not tied together in some way. But alas, we’ll have to wait until season five.
“My Best Friend’s Wedding” ties the mystery up with a nice bow while giving us one last bittersweet moment to remember Sazz. It also sets the stage for the next case that lacks in buzz from previous seasons, but is more violent and graphic.
