A proper Pokemon game on Nintendo Switch has been demanded since the console was announced. While there has never been a true console Pokemon RPG, the Switch’s hybrid nature gave fans more hope than usual that the franchise’s RPG roots would be represented on the console.
Today at a reveal event in Japan, Nintendo announced that it’s finally happening!
…Sort of.
In true Nintendo fashion, Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let’s Go Evee! aren’t exactly what was asked for, but looks innovative an interesting nonetheless. The game looks like a 3D remake of the game’s RPG roots mixed with Pokemon GO‘s simplified catching mechanics — at least in the video provided, it doesn’t appear that you actually fight the Pokemon to catch them. One Joy-Con is used to control the game, allowing the player to flick Pokeballs at their foes. An optional Pokeball accessory will also be available.
The game will also actually link up with Pokemon GO, allowing players to see the Pokemon they’ve caught in the augmented reality smartphone came on their Switches. It is currently unknown if there will be any more interactivity with Pokemon GO.
Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let’s Go: Evee! will be released on Nintendo Switch on November 16, 2018.
UPDATE: Nintendo has also announced that a “core series RPG title,” tentatively titled Pokemon Quest, is in development and will release in the second half of 2019.
