On Wednesday, Marvel Studios released the first teaser trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. While many of us already saw it play after the credits of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the YouTube release gives us a chance to dissect and overanalyze things a bit.
We start with what we can safely assume is some very bad fallout from Strange’s multiverse meddling spell in No Way Home. This is followed by what appears to be a glimpse Strange and Christine Palmer getting married…or perhaps an alternate/happier reality. Just remember that despite the awesome What If…? episode she was featured in, Palmer is still very much alive in the MCU.
We also get our first look on screen at America Chavez, although it’s only the back of her iconic jean jacket.
After the Marvel Studios logo, we next see Strange visiting Wanda Maximoff (aka the Scarlet Witch) while she’s in hiding. The events of WandaVision are briefly discussed before Strange asks for her help with a multiverse related issue.
From there, we see a quick glimpse of Strange and a barely visible Chavez standing at a doorway to the multiverse. This is followed by Mordo explaining to Strange (who is accompanied by Wong) that he is actually the greatest threat to the multiverse…
Before that statement is finished, we see Strange doing battle what I’m fairly certain is Shuma Gorath, a Lovecraftian being of immense evil/power.
After that mind blowing sequence, we get to the trailer’s major reveal–the Stephen Strange that Mordo is referring to appears to actually be Strange Supreme, the corrupted version of the sorcerer we saw back in What If..?
Of course, the sequencing of the dialogue could simply be a misdirect and Mordo really does want to kick Prime Strange’s ass. Whatever the case, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is shaping up to be one wild ride.
