‘Drive Like Hell’ #1 review

A great horror story with mysterious and supernatural elements.

Dark Horse Comics presents Drive Like Hell #1, a thrilling heist-gone-wrong story from the creative team behind the popular comic series Road of Bones, writer Rich Douek and artist Alex Cormack. The story follows longtime thief Bobby Ray and his girlfriend Dahlia as they attempt to pull off their biggest heist yet. However, their plan goes to shit and Dahlia ends up shot in the head. Despite this small setback, Dahlia somehow is still alive in sorts, and Bobby Ray finds himself in the midst of a bizarre supernatural situation with the police and a mysterious group of men dead on his trail with a muscle car at the center of it all.

Drive Like Hell #1 keeps you guessing throughout the story. Although it’s clear that Bobby Ray’s girlfriend is dead, artist Alex Cormack takes a similar approach to that in Evil Dead, where Dahlia’s corpse comes back to life and talks to Bobby. The panels are wickedly well done and help elevate the story perfectly. In addition, letterer Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou does an excellent job of making bold and easy to read captions, indicating when the story is in the past or present.

The story is both exciting and unpredictable, and Douek does an excellent job of keeping his dialogue concise and focused on the narrative. Douek’s words drive the story forward and make the reader eager to turn the page and see what happens next. The characters are believable and well-suited to the story, while the stakes and antagonists are compelling. Overall, it’s a crazy, bizarre and awesome story fitting of the title.

Illustrator Alex Cormack did a great job in capturing horror and supernatural elements in Drive Like Hell #1. Each panel is more insane than the last, bringing a great deal of emotion to each page. Cormack’s usage of smoke, fire, and chaos adds to the story’s madness and delivers a freight train of madness that perfectly suits the story’s theme.

Drive Like Hell #1 is a great horror story with mysterious and supernatural elements. Fans of horror will love it.
