The final issue of Spirit World reveals the tragic backstory of Wan Yujing and her path to becoming a collective. A little more background on Xanthe’s origins, some great fight sequences, a compassionate closure to the confrontation with Yujing and a deal with the Jade Court round out a great conclusion to this six-issue miniseries.

Wan Yujing is given a sympathetic backstory which adds depth and motivation to her character. A famous poet and artist in ancient times, she and her works have been forgotten over the centuries while she waits in vain for reincarnation. This is important for establishing that the Jade Court is ultimately responsible for her rampage. Though it’s never explained why, the court is no longer reincarnating spirits, possibly out of greed or simple apathy.
Our trio of heroes has their hands full fighting the Golden General as well as the monstrous collective that Yujing has become. Batgirl tries to take on Yujing, but quickly realizes the collective has control of her from their previous contamination. Constantine and Xanthe square up against the General, but they are overwhelmed in short order. When they’re on the edge of defeat, Xanthe discovers the bracelet Po Po imparted when they were younger, has powerful magical abilities. Powerful enough to defeat the Golden General with some help from Constantine. Xanthe is now able to manifest objects even without Joss paper and the General quickly recognizes it as magic similar to the Verdant Sorceress.

Throughout the fight sequences, we get glimpses of Xanthe’s past from their own returning memories as well as insights from the Jade Court. It turns out Po Po attempted to reincarnate Xanthe on her own, a task that usually takes all eight members of the Court. Xanthe’s current abilities are the result of this experiment, neither fully alive or dead, an envoy between the two worlds. Xanthe remembering the kindness shown to them by Po Po is an inspiration for how they deal with Yujing. Instead of violence and magic, Xanthe offers compassion and understanding. It’s refreshing to see a character that doesn’t always resort to violence to solve their problems in a superhero comic. Xanthe consistently finds ways to end conflicts with kindness and empathy. Xanthe’s unique abilities, their connection to Po Po’s actions, and their compassionate problem-solving approach set them apart as a character who doesn’t rely solely on violence. This thematic choice offers a refreshing twist in the superhero genre, emphasizing the power of kindness and empathy.
With the collective appeased, the rest of the Jade Court finally joins the action outside the Jade Tower. The Carmine Star is ready to destroy Xanthe, Batgirl and Constantine, but others in the Court seem intrigued by their abilities and are entertained by the recent events. Through some deft negotiations, Xanthe is able to broker a seat on the Jade Court and safe passage for their friends.
Alyssa Wong’s writing was engaging and coherent. The narrative is well-structured with a good balance of suspense and character-driven moments. Using flashbacks and the gradual return of memories, she adds depth and intrigue to the narrative. The resolution based on compassion provides a satisfying and unexpected conclusion to the story. It subverts traditional expectations and underscores the power of empathy in overcoming challenges.
The art by Hainning and colors by Sebastian Cheng are fantastic as we’ve come to expect from this book. The flashback to Yujing’s past is done in a beautiful sepia tone making it look aged, as if it were an actual scroll thousands of years old, or an old wood block print. The Golden General’s bright yellow lightning juxtaposed to Xanthe and Constantine’s orange, blue and green magic provides a nice contrast. There’s also great chorography happening with Batgirl, flying through the pages, leaping up in the air fighting the collective. Xanthe’s facial expressions are also a highlight, you can see the determination, compassion and understanding in their eyes throughout the issue as the circumstances change.
Spirit World #6 utilizes engaging and coherent writing, combined with a well-structured narrative featuring a balance of suspense and character-driven moments, to create a compelling conclusion to the story. The use of flashbacks and gradual memory return adds depth and intrigue. The resolution centered on compassion subverts expectations and highlights the power of empathy. Coupled with Hainning’s fantastic art and Sebastian Cheng’s excellent colors, the issue offers a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience. Hopefully, Xanthe will return to the DC universe soon. Their adventure has made for an artistically beautiful and emotionally resonant series.
