‘Spider-Man: Great Power, Great Mayhem’ TPB is great for young readers

Slightly goofy and always endearing, ‘Spider-Man: Great Power, Great Mayhem’ is a great time.

Younger readers are going to adore Spider-Man: Great Power, Great Mayhem, a new trade paperback out this week. Crafted by writers Steve Foxe and Marco Rizzo, the new collection features shorter tales with incredible visuals and fun stories surrounding a young Peter Parker. Ever wanted to see Peter flunk a driving test? How about managing to get a huge bag of balloons to an Avengers party? You get that and a lot more with this new collection.

First off, this collection is also slightly smaller in size, which is perfect for smaller kid hands. The stories are also only about eight pages long, making them easy to read for newer readers. That also goes for readers who have less patience, but I bet once they get started, they won’t want to stop.

That’s thanks to the writers capturing Peter’s personality well. Gone are the gloom and doom days of his adult life and back is a kid trying to get to class on time. That, or simply stay awake through class. The writers clearly have a good sense of what a teenager wants to read and how a teenager, Peter Parker, acts. It’s also nice to see a hopeful Peter with friends like Mary Jane helping him out.

Longtime fans will enjoy the various villains that pop up. Mainstays like Kraven and Vulture make appearances, but who would have thought a deep cut like Super-Adaptoid would give Spidey a hard time? There’s a fun animated cartoon feel to these tales that feels light but also leans into the stakes and drama as needed. Kids will love these zany adventures.

The art is stupendous, with an illustrated style that is a cut above the usual monthly cape books. Artists include Claudio Sciarrone, Mario Del Pennino, Arianna Florean, and color artists Valentina Taddeo and Valentina Pinto. The visual style is going to sell many on picking this up, with a nice smaller look to Spider-Man that suits his age.

Slightly goofy and always endearing, Spider-Man: Great Power, Great Mayhem is a great time.
