X-Men Monday #333 – Tim Seeley Talk ‘Inglorious X-Force’

Plus, an eXclusive look at ‘Inglorious X-Force’ #3, 4, and 7!

Welcome, X-Fans, to another uncanny edition of X-Men Monday at AIPT!

In the X-Men: Shadows of Tomorrow series, Inglorious X-Force, Cable has assembled a new mutant strike force, featuring Archangel, Boom-Boom, and Hellverine, to figure out which of them might one day be responsible for the assassination of President Kamala Khan. Did I mention that modern-day Ms. Marvel is also in the mix and aware of her potential future fate?

It’s quite the setup for this latest iteration of X-Force, and with the series third issue about to go on sale, there’s no better time to check in with its writer Tim Seeley. Let’s see what he has to say.

AIPT: Welcome back to X-Men Monday, Tim! Let’s start by talking about your eclectic cast of mutants. X-Fans Christian Smith, Kayson, Jared, and Rebel all ask how you landed on this roster.

Tim Seeley: It was very much a back and forth with the X-editors. My personal requirements were Cable, Ms. Marvel, and Boom-Boom, since my initial pitch totally revolved around the relationships of those characters. And then we chatted about how to make it a team that had members from across multiple eras of the book, which led us to Domino and Archangel. Akihiro was a suggestion of Mark Basso, and admittedly, I was skeptical at first, but then I talked to some of my comics friends like Jordan Blum, Ben Percy, and Steve Orlando, and saw lots of potential for him based on their endorsements.

The characters I got shot down on were Multiple Man and Bishop!

AIPT: Interesting! Now, X-Fans Isaiah Meehan and Key say the President Kamala Khan story bit has come up a few times over different series.  What made you want to explore it — and Kamala — in Inglorious X-Force?

Tim: When Basso asked me to pitch it, my first thought was that my absolute favorite narrative in those early X-Force issues was that it was all about Cable “corrupting” the youth. He took this wide-eyed optimist, Sam Guthrie, and turned him into a soldier.  And I thought, 30-some years later, who is the “Cannonball” of modern Marvel? It was Kamala all the way, AND she was now a mutant! Bonus!

AIPT: X-Fan Jason is curious to learn how being on Cable’s X-Force team might affect Kamala. And how might Kamala influence all those hardcore characters around her?

Tim: That, to me, is what’s most interesting about it. And yes, I totally want to see a cover with Ms. Marvel holding a giant Cable gun, and looking badass, but I also want to see how her genuine optimism messes with cynical Boom-Boom, and grim Akihiro.

AIPT: X-Fan Liviu Dragan is wondering what this team’s mission statement is compared to the other X-Force groups before it. Is it just to protect Kamala? Or is there more you want to say in this series as it evolves?

Tim: Oh, there’s PLENTY of stuff besides “protect Kamala.” Obviously, a big part of any X-Force book is about staring into the abyss and having it stare back, right? So, Cable is a broken, beaten old soldier who can’t stop fighting wars, and that’s going to put him in conflict with his team, but also the other X-teams. Plus — he has to solve a murder that hasn’t yet happened, and he’s surrounded by people he thinks might be murderers… so much fun stuff!

AIPT: X-Fan Phil thinks Boom-Boom is great, and is so glad to see her around and in good hands. But in your opinion, what makes Boom-Boom so great, and how do you use that to inform how you write her?

Tim: For me, Boom-Boom is the ultimate Gen X-er… And I don’t mean the team with Chamber on it. I mean, she started as this latchkey Madonna, and was there for the evolution of ‘90s comics the entire way, then landed in Nextwave, which is the ultimate parody of early 2000s Ultimatizing. So, her references, her paths through comics, are pretty much exactly mine. I also love that she’s this resilient, unfazeable badass — who lives to have a good time. As a financially lower-class character, I figured she’d have a compelling relationship with Warren, too.

AIPT: Speaking of — X-Fan Isaiah Meehan always finds it interesting that, despite it being forced upon him against his will by Apocalypse, Warren Worthington III seems at times to prefer being Archangel instead of himself. Any thoughts on that and what we can expect from Warren as your story unfolds?

Tim: I think Warren has accepted himself as both Angel and Archangel by this point. He has two sides, and he knows it. Which makes sense… he’s a billionaire industrialist, and a scrappy superhero. He’s used to it. So, I didn’t want to play him as tortured — but I do think he fears what he was and could become again… and we definitely pick that up in issues 4 and 5. If Cable is looking for a killer, the guy who was LITERALLY DEATH isn’t a bad place to start.

AIPT: X-Fan Andromeda says Akihiro seems to know about the occult, and he used magic before, from the book Dr. Strange had given him to contain his demon Bagra Ghul. Does that mean magic is now in his general toolkit? Can we expect to see him using more magic besides claws and hellfire? It would be very interesting.

Tim: Yeah, I think he’s a novice wizard, but he’s obviously knee deep in demon stuff. It’s still a mutant book, and that’s most important to me, but it’s pretty cool that he has another side to him that definitely acts as a great story engine, and makes him useful in other ways to Cable and his teammates.

AIPT: X-Fan Jared asks how it is collaborating with artist Michael Sta. Maria? What’s your creative process like?

Tim: So far, I mostly send him scripts, get back cool drawings, and say, “Sweet.” He’s a professional guy… I mostly get out of his way.

AIPT: Finally, X-Fan Alex Dee is enjoying both Inglorious X-Force and Psylocke: Ninja and finds your Betsy Braddock extremely compelling. Any thoughts on adding her to your Inglorious X-Force roster?

Tim: I’m really happy with the roster as is, but I do love Betsy-Psylocke… maybe there’s a guest spot down the line! I mean, at some point, we’ll probably have to fight ninjas, right?
