Gods & Monsters combines the best of Assassin’s Creed and Breath of the Wild

Wearing its inspiration on its sleeve.

Last week a rumored project, codenamed Orpheus, made the rounds. At Ubisoft’s E3 Press Conference, Orpheus was revealed to be Gods & Monsters, a fantasy open-world adventure in the vein of Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in both tone and scope.

Gods & Monsters features combat with fabled creatures pulled straight from the pages of mythology. Puzzle solving, exploration, and traversing the landscape are also significant elements — sound familiar? Players’ actions are limited by a stamina meter and planning your course of travel is crucial to your success. In an interesting twist, players’ actions are narrated by Greece’s most prolific storyteller, Homer, as he recalls your adventure to his grandchildren. If you’ve seen The Princess Bride, you should have an idea of what’s in store.

Ubisoft describes the game as follows:

“In Gods & Monsters, the Greek gods have fallen, and it’s up to Fenyx, a hero forgotten by myth, to see them take their place atop Mt. Olympus once again. The Isle of the Blessed has been taken over by Typhon – the deadliest of all Greek monsters – and you’ll need to defeat him and his army of dangerous mythological beasts to restore order. To accomplish this, you’ll have to overcome puzzling trials, traverse treacherous dungeons, take on legendary quests, and battle Greek mythology’s most lethal monsters in this open-world action adventure.”

Gods & Monsters is a new IP brought to gamers by the team behind Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, Ubisoft Quebec. The game uses Assassin’s Creed‘s game engine and technology to create a vast new world and system mechanics with a unique tone and art style.

Gods & Monsters is coming to all major consoles and PC on February 25, 2020, including PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, and Uplay+. Watch the game trailer below and stay tuned for more information over the coming months.
