Baby Yoda taking over the internet and no one seems upset about it, except for maybe the folks who created him.
Baby Yoda, the miniature breakout star of Disney’s new live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, has become one of the internet’s most prized memes and GIFs in recent weeks. But the adorable miniature version of the legendary Jedi Master began to vanish without warning over the past week from GIPHY, the primary tool people use to share GIFs on the internet.
As it turns out, Disney, the creator of Baby Yoda, was the group responsible for his sudden absence for GIPHY. The mouse eared company issued copyright takedown notices to GIPHY and other GIF content provides, demanding Baby Yoda’s removal, much to the outrage of essentially everyone that uses the internet.
Thankfully our adorable little green friend has been returned to his rightful place atop the throne of internet memes and GIFs, after Disney reversed course and allowed GIF creating company’s to put him back in the hands of fans.
GIPHY issued the following statement Monday afternoon in regards to the missing Baby Yoda GIFs.
Last week, there was some confusion around certain content uploaded to GIPHY and we temporarily removed these GIFs while we reviewed the situation. We apologize to both Disney and Vulture for any inconvenience, and we are happy to report that the GIFs are once again live on GIPHY.
There’s not much that people are the internet collectively agree about these days, but Baby Yoda is undoubtedly the exception.
The fourth episode of The Mandalorian will be released on Disney+ on Friday, Nov. 29 at 12am. You can view the full release schedule for The Mandalorian here.
