Team Ninja revealed their next project today during Sony’s State of Play. Rise of the Ronin will transport players to an evolving Japan in the years leading up to the Meiji era. You’ll take control of a ronin, a warrior with no master, who will fight to “forge a new era for Japan.” Combat shown in the trailer features katanas, as you might expect, as well as firearms that are making their way into Japan during this time. The trailer also shows off traversal via a very cool looking glider.
Rise of the Ronin will be a PlayStation 5 exclusive and will join an impressive lineup of recent samurai games, like Ghost of Tsushima, Trek to Yomi, and Like a Dragon: Ishin!, which was also revealed during the State of Play. You can read more about it over on the PlayStation Blog, where Team Ninja director Fumihiko Yasuda describes Rise of the Ronin as “undoubtedly the most ambitious and challenging project for Team Ninja Studio to date.”
Team Ninja has become one of the industry’s most prolific developers in recent years. They’re known for their Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, and Nioh series, and also made a very fun Marvel game in Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 for the Switch. Their next game is the multiplatform RPG Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty that will release next year. Rise of the Ronin is expected in 2024.
