Marvel confirms the Spider-Man and Mary Jane romance may be over for good

‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #20 confirms it’s over between Peter Parker and Mary Jane.

Spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #20 ahead. You’ve been warned.

It has been dicey for Mary Jane and Peter Parker shippers, especially since Zeb Wells launched his run in 2022, revealing Mary Jane was married with kids. That all ties to the mystery around Spider-Man and “What did Peter do,” which will be explained according to a teaser in the coming months. Key word in that latter teaser is “Heartbreaking.”

Things may have gone from bad to worse for MJ and Peter shippers, though, as we see in Joe Kelly and Terry Dodson’s two-part story arc, with the second part out today in Amazing Spider-Man #20.

The story started with Peter and Black Cat going to a spa, although Black Cat said it’s not a date. In the second part out today, however, it appears it’s very much more romantic than one might think. In fact, White Rabbit calls out Black Cat numerous times, asking what she sees in Spider-Man.

Black Cat mostly stays mum, but things end a little more conclusively by the end. I wouldn’t say it confirms Black Cat is Spider-Man’s one true love, but it all but confirms Peter Parker and Mary Jane are done for good.

In the scene–which you can read below–Spider-Man tries to explain to Black Cat what he sees in Mary Jane. In a statement that you would have a hard time dialing back, he calls Mary Jane “more like a sister…”

To be fair, Black Cat calls him out on it, but for him to even consider her a sister is crushing. How could you ever see a love interest in that way?

Spider-Man does admit he loves her and always will, but things are very much done between them going forward.

What do you think? Am I blowing the “sister” comment out of proportion? Let me know in the comments. Either way, read the entire issue to get the entire picture.
