On Monday, Aaron Couch and Borys Kit of the Hollywood Reporter revealed that Liv Tyler will reprise her role as Betty Ross in the upcoming Captain America film, Captain America: New World Order.
Although it was many years ago, Tyler portrayed one of the first major MCU characters in 2008’s The Hulk. She also isn’t the only character from that movie to make a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tim Roth’s Emil Blonsky (aka the Abomination) recently showed up Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings before playing a major role in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.
Tim Black Nelson will also return as Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader — who isn’t a hugely popular villain outside of hardcore Hulk fans, but most folks will recognize him as the big green dude with an enormous forehead. Considering that we saw him turning into The Leader in the 2008 film, it’s a safe bet that he’ll end up being one of the villains in Captain America: New World Order.
As for how Betty Ross will play into things, it’s likely to be connected to her father, Thadeus “Thunderbolt Ross, who will play a major role in the movie. After actor William Hurt tragically passed away following a battle with prostate cancer, the role was recast with Harrison Ford. The smart money right now is on him being CGIed into a version of the Red Hulk.
So why all the Incredible Hulk characters in a movie that’s supposed to feature Sam Wilson? It’s partly due to the complicated film rights that Disney/Marvel Studios share with Universal, who has the right of first refusal on any Hulk solo film projects. That’s likely to change at some point in the future, but for now, bringing in the popular character’s science and military-based cast seems like a good fit for the world of Captain America.
Captain America: New World Order is set to release on May 3, 2024.
